I am currently a Senior Lecturer in the media department at Manchester School of Art teaching on the Filmmaking and Creative Multimedia programmes. From 2010-15 I was a Senior Lecturer in the Media Department at Coventry School of Art and Design lecturing on courses in digital media and media production.
My teaching experience spans a range of areas including film, interactive media and new media practice and theory. I have taught on BA and MA courses in Digital Media, Filmmaking, Media Production and Communications and Culture. I also developed a practice-based interdisciplinary BA course in Digital Media exploring the intersection of media practice, digital arts, design, science and culture.
My research is developed through creative practice in digital multi-platform projects, immersive media development & production and education initiatives that use emerging technologies and digital environments. It draws upon inter-disciplinary approaches and explores a number of areas including digital & interactive media, immersive storytelling, transmedia, digital experience design and digital learning.
My current PhD research is around that way that immersive media (mixed reality, virtual reality, augmented reality) can be used for engaging people in new kinds of mediated storytelling experiences in urban space.
I have been involved in research and practice with a wide range of organisations such as the BBC, BT, HEFCE, UNDP, NHS, JISC, the FA, Sport England, Virgin Radio, Aim Higher and the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. This also includes a number of UK and European funded Research Council projects where I have developed innovations in digital engagement.
I’m very much interested in multimedia storytelling as a catalyst for social change and I often undertake voluntary work for a number of creative community, activist and charity projects.
